AFAIK this depends on the question,
if you want to use pdflatex or not.
If yes, try this:
1. Insert Figure: Encapsulated Postscript
2. "Browse..."
3. change the "Pattern" from *ps to *
4. press the "enter" key
5. choose your jpg or png or pdf
6. ok, ok
7. View PDF (pdflatex)
Does that work?
If you don't want to use pdflatex,
you can try out the new "Insert External Material".
AFAIK this converts automatically "everything" to EPS.
