It's a bit weird, but it works.
Summary for anyone interested:-
1) Put \usepackage{multirow} in the preamble;
2) For (eg) 4 cells joined vertically, put the line
\multirow{4}{14mm} in the first cell (in Tex mode);
3) After experimenting, I found it best to place text for row 1
before the Tex command, this keeps the central alignment I am
trying to use. Your mileage may vary...
4) Right-click in the top cell, and define as 'multicolumn' (yup, that's
right, multicolumn);
5) repeat (4) for the remaining three cells (all of which can contain text).
