So far all comments I've seen say to go on with features, specifically
adding support for additional file formats besides EPS and PNG (each for
its respective output PS and PDF).

The reason for my question is that inline viewing is present in the
FigInset, adding/replacing FigInset with the new GraphicsInset without the
inline viewing seemed to me has an unacceptable behaviour.

Because of the (few) responses I received so far I'll disable the limited
inline viewing I currently have, draw an empty rectangle instead and
switch on to the highly requested feature of adding additional input
formats.
