page margins

I've been trying to play with the margins of my thesis to take into
account the binding. What I'm after is to shift the text body a couple of
centimetres or so to the right so that it isn't obscured when the thesis
is bound. I've tried setting the left margin using the geometry package
but the right margin is then also changed to compensate, leaving the page
still centred.

Any help would be gratefully received as I'm hoping to take the thesis to
the binders next week.
