Sax was not sufficient to accomplish this task (also SuSe 6.x): I had to
edit the /etc/XF86Config file by hand


Look for something similar in this file like:

Section "Pointer"
   Protocol        "IMPS/2"
   Device          "/dev/psaux"
   Resolution      100
   Buttons         5
   ZAxisMapping    4 5
EndSection

The ZAxisMapping and Buttons directives are the ones you should
check/add.
