I've got the problem solved. I reinstalled the entire TeX distro from source. Seems that it was a bad TeX install from the Slack .tgz package. I'd be interested to know if anyone with Slack 7.0 has LyX running well on a stock system. Anyway, the interesting thing now is that my documents contain all kinds of errors. I think the old system was only dubiously working. That's fine, correcting stuff is easy as long as it's working, and at least this way I *know* that TeX is a good install :-) Many thanks to Jean-Marc and the others who helped track this down.
