Well I guess compose key and how to setup you Xmodmap is also a FAQ (hint ;)
Look at this command sequences which you have to put into a ~/.Xmodmap file
(at least in Linux this works) 'Compose' is called there 'Multi_key' and
for all of you who don't know what that is it is to add more than one keypress
to ONE single charater f.ex.: Compose-^+0 = ° or Compose-"+a = ä

Now to the file:

! here 109 = RightControl but you can use whatever key you want just
! look up the keycode with xev
keycode 109 = Multi_key
