So in your mail editor you tress "^" and then space to get '^' ?
That should work in LyX too, but it is very possible that 1.1.2 had a
bug in this respect.
Anyway if you can get your keyboad to generate an asciicircum you have
solved the problem.
Also try the lyx command
"accent-circumflex"
and then press [space]
