Making new document classes

Is there a way to make new document classes or modify existing ones? I like
Article, but would like to cut out the date after the title. Also Invoice would
be nice.

I found out recently that patent attorneys use MS Word to write patents. I find
this strange. The reference feature makes LyX ideal for typing claims (add a
claim and the references renumber themselves). Is there a Patent class that
does the two-column format with line numbers?
