The solution turned out to be the minipage suggestion. I do recall trying
to create one for a buried table now, but "nothing seemed to happen" (perhaps a
spin off of WYSIWYG-ism?) so I forgot about it. I obviously really screwed
up the selection in that case. Back to the manual.
I really like the way Lyx is working for me, so I'm very grateful for your
input. When one is at the beginning of something different like this
transition, it is really easy to get knocked off the horse when such a blind
problem arises.
