I do not think it is needed, they could be in a figs/ subdirectory
too, or anyway pointed to by TEXINPUTS.
That is true. But only if they set TEXINPUTS, and I am assuming most
LyX users do not set their TEXINPUTS. On the other hand, the current
dir is always searched by default.
