I think you have to grab revtex from macros/latex209/contrib/revtex at
a nearby CTAN mirror.

why it goes into 2.09 compatibility mode.
LyX also has revtex4 support, which works with LaTeX2e (but you also need to
get the revtex4 packages).
The tetex-lyx package only puts the tex macro files that LyX ships with
to the correct tetex directory and runs texhash to let tetex see it. It
does not package up any external macro files (like revtex).
