I must admit that I fine the \cite{} obsolete, but then I use the
natbib package for my references, unlike perhaps J-M and many others.

My wife has just finished a dissertation using Lyx but being new to Lyx
and LATEX she was both pleased with the overall results, and very
fraustrated with all the red text in her document (the LATEX \citep and
\citet commands in particular), especially when she really wasnt sure
what it was all about, and didn't want to know. All she wanted to do
was write her thesis. That seems to me to be partly the point behind
Lyx: documentation preparation without the headache...most of the time.

The point of the anecdote is that I think Gerald is right in raising this.
Perhaps it could be provided as an additional option for different kinds of cite,
or preferences in lyxrc, or a patch for those who want to do citep
etc?

Using Lyx continues to give considerable advantages over, say, a text
editor and LaTeX, for me at least. (No doubt some emacs users would
disagree, but emacs is a way of life, not an editor, or so I am
told). However, this kind of fix would make it all the better IMO.
