Alas!  This was the problem.  I had assumed that LyX would look for
`fixed' when it couldn't find a font it needed; apparently there is no
alternative to the helvetica specification for those menu and popup
fonts.  Once I installed the Helvetica and Times families in .bdf
format (the MicroImages X-server, despite the documentation, doesn't
seem to like .pcf fonts), LyX starts and runs like a champ with the
display on the PC X-server -- nice way to use the only word-processor
I like on a laptop running ms-windows-NT.
