You can use the caption2 letex package. For example, to achieve smaller
text in captions, put this in the latex preamble of your Lyx documents:

\usepackage[small]{caption2}

Of course, you must have the package... in this case you also have the
documentation, which will explain you other caption manipulations
possible.
