OK, now I remember. At some point AGU was considering an xml based format. Since lyx supports (more or less) docbook-xml Martin used that has a basis for that format (the xml based AGU). In a sense that is similar to the xhtml mode that lyx supports. That is the reason why those layout files have my name on them. Martin used the docbook support as a basis for that, so he copied the files from docbook* to agu_*, retaining the copyright note. I was not directly involved in that project. Now back to the original question, since I did not heard further about the development of the project (AGU xml) I think that we can obsolete those styles.
