i have been experimenting with the fonts.
i have 3 gentoo boxes and on all of them the behaviour is different:
(now i will talk only about serif(roman) font)

1)
lyx starts first time; it uses times new roman and everything is ok

2)
lyx starts; it starts using Bitstream Vera Serif, which has no good accents.
however if i remove Bitstream fonts from /etc/fonts/font.conf
lyx detects some another, which is ok.

3)
lyx starts using Newspaper font with wrong accents, which is not in font.conf
at all.

choosing default fonts on different systems seems unpredictible.
