I am doing it piece by piece to understand why and how it was done,
far from obvious to me.
Not trying to restart any discussions, but please people, when doing
cleanups, moving code around etc. Please do try to do it in steps.
(And make the steps visibly by separate commits, f.ex. to a branch, or
even to trunk if nothing controversial is going on, makes debugging
and looking for correctness _way_ easier.)
