This is typically something that could go in one frontend only.

Something that is more boring for me is being forced to update my
distribution to get the version of the day. I use mandrake 10.1 here,
and I am not going to use it with a version of qt which is not the
same as what my KDE uses. Different people have different needs.

Come on! You manage to keep at least two branches of LyX up to date in your system and you are bored with installing a library once? I really think this not a real argument.

In any case, when LyX/Qt4 has more features that LyX/Qt3 we will see how many users want to stay with LyX/Qt3 just because they cannot be bothered to install a library. In any case, providing an alternative rpm or a deb which contains libQtCore.so and libQtGui.so should not be too difficult to do.
