I want to turn it around so that the frontend instantiate the
"kernel". That makes the frontend master of its domain.
This also makes it easer to view the kernel just as a library

I am fully in line with you Lars. The question is when? I believe that
my cleanup work would help achieve that goal but probably not in the 1.5
time frame.
