In fact, it seems to me that dropping "native" Win95/98/Me support is the only
sensible thing to do, given that MikTeX (perhaps the most popular TeX port to
Win) has also dropped support, and even Microsoft is about to declare it
officially dead. AFAIK, that makes LyXWin9x a zombie at this point.

LyX14x may still work (it *still* works) on top of XWin on Win9x/Me, but very
slowly and painfully. If people are planning to buy a machine anyway, they may
as well get Linux/Win2k+ on it.
