You know, you use the file manager because it is more confortable for
browsing a tree. Then you press the right mouse button and select
"open a terminal here" because you want to do something there.
When the terminal finally opens I had even forgot what I wanted
to do.

4 years ago, back when Linux was my system of choice, I used to use konqueror (KDE) with an embedded console that will follow the tree view; It was very nifty and very fast. I can only suppose that it is still the case.
