That's an interesting point because LyX is quite portable right now
exactly due to the use of autoconf. 

Getting things to compile on old *nixes is not exactly simple and I
you should not be surprised if you get a bumpy ride with alternatives to
auto*, too.

I sort of depise the autotools, too, but the replacement should not
be worse.
