Hello Uwe,

Just my two cents on that issue:

Your installer helped me convinced some people to use LyX so I think that everybody agrees that it is very good. I can only suggest that you wait until Joost publish his new installer; maybe he have very good reasons to rewrite it instead of patching your version. You know, in software development it's always nicer to try to reuse something but in some case rewriting is the only solution. Joost is apparently one of the NSIS developer so he might be able to simplify/modularize better than any of Angus, Bo or you could... Just wait and see. Software evolves.

All your hard work into cleaning up your local softwares (Miktex, etc) is not lost because Joost said his installer will be extensible to any additional package.

Abdel.

The problems are with licenses, and size of installers, and admin right.

The only complaint I received was the admin right problem. I asked several times about the licence issues and they are correct now - means there is no license issue at the moment. And about the size, my small installer is the smallest usable solution. The only thing I could get rid of is Ghostscript and GSview, that would decrease the size about 6 MB, but then users aren't possible to view Postscript. But anyway, nobody complained about the installer size, this is a new fact for me.

So please don't start a new installer project, this is unnecessary.

It is necessary in that we need only *one* installer. If you can not
make yours accepted, we have to improve the official one, or start a
new one that may be accepted.

I agree that we need only ONE installer. But who didn't accept my installer? Everybody helped me to be able to provide it, it's hosted on ftp.lyx.org, so what? I don't think we should start a new one and that "may" be accepted. Let's discuss it and then start to improve the installer to get it into a consensus state.

In my opinion we just need to
- work that the installer don't need admin permissions - hard to do,
  something for Jost ;-)
- get rid of GSview and Ghostscript if really needed - very easy to do

and that's it I think.
Btw. now also some ITs in universities are using it; I've also heard that because of the installer some were able to convince his boss to test out LyX. So why should we get rid of a winning and stable program, better we improve it.

I'm advertising my installer solution here not only because of the installer itself, it costs more time to get the installer working with the third party programs. The actual MiKTeX version was build for my installer and some new features are in now to be able to configure MiKTeX to work perfectly with LyX. The Imagemagick people fixed a lot of graphics bugs and developed new useful features for us (e.g. the PDF cropping). Due to our initiative the BaKoMa math fonts are now under the GPL and also some Ghostscript bugs were fixed for our needs. We should use this!

regards Uwe
