Windows users may be incompetent, but not stupid. "No viewer found"
is a *common* behavior whenever someone double clicks a file
without a proper viewer. Any windows user knows that s/he needs a
proper viewer to continue.

I happen to be also a windows user (almost daily).
Well *that* is a good news... for us that is, maybe not for you ;-)
And I care also
about mac users. I did not have the time to look through all the UI
guidelines, but I would not be surprised to see "Don't add menu
entries that do not work".
I am quite sure you will also find "Don't hide menu entries that do not
work, disable them instead"
I'd like to see your examples of windows programs that have this
behaviour. In explorer, you have an icon that warns you that you won't
be able to open the file.
Nope, Explorer will show you icons that have associated types. It could
well be that Explorer is wrong about that and the program is no longer
available. There are many applications that don't un-register mime types
when you uninstall them. I even think lyx fall into that category (I
maybe wrong here).
It reminds me of these shareware programs with menu entries that seems
to be working, but the only effect is to display "Ha! this would have
worked if you had the full version!".
:-) Year I remember that. That's why I never use shareware...

I agree to too that needing to re-configure is bad, I I propose to
remove this need for windows (and later mac) by doing a proper query
of the operating system. This does not seem so strange to me.
It is not. Bo just think that the user is big enough to do this by
himself. But if you come up with a patch that does what you say then I
am sure Bo will be happy too. I will be for sure. In the mean time Bo's
patch works now.
What you propose is to add menu entries for things that do not work,
it is different.
A good compromise is to disable the menu without hiding them then.
