Good observation. For Gnome, it is the application registry, specifically files under /usr/share/applications/ and /usr/share/application-registry/. This is used by Nautilus (and appears to be a freedesktop standard): http://lists.freedesktop.org/pipermail/xdg/2004-July/004140.html However, there seems to be no current API (there is a deprecated one) for other apps to use this. - Martin
