The other discussions were always about configure.ac. I did not understand 
why the issue of changing the eol-style property of one single file 
generated such a bug discussion, so I ignored most of it.

The extra effort of fixing the wrong line endings after the precommit hook 
decided that something was wrong.

If you say that eol-style creates bigger problems then I am all for the 
precommit hook. What I simply do not like at all are mixed line endings 
in the repository (or having to fix that manually).
