Very good point. I have made some notes for me myself (though they should come 
with an example before going into the wiki):


Character styles in LyX:
========================
Character styles are used for similar things as paragraph styles in
LyX, except that they refer to a number of characters and not to a
whole paragraph.

There are two examples for how to define character styles distributed
with lyx in .../layouts/:
db_stdcharstyles.inc and agu_stdtitle.inc

To format text accroding to character styles in a document insert a
new charstyle inset.
