I posted the results of my testing to bugzilla. There are two issues compared 
to 1.3, which we probably should try to resolve (one of them, the problem 
with \text, is a general one, unrelated to the patch, the second one probably 
also).

But apart from these, the patch works very well. I tested lots and lots of 
constructs, and apart from the two described problems, they worked in 1.4 as 
good as in 1.3. Also, 1.3 documents with xymatrix constructs load fine in 1.4 
(with the patch).

Given the outcry on lyx-users, which shows that xymatrix is actually used and 
some people rely on it, I think we should apply the patch. xymatrix support 
might be broken here and there, but that's what it was in 1.3, and I think a 
partial broken xymatrix is way better than removed support, the more so as 
1.3 documents with xymatrix constructs will suffer from dataloss without the 
patch.
