Which frontend are you using? If it is qt, they can be configured for all qt
programs with a tool called qtconfig. On my machine they look exactly like
in 1.3 (but with slightly smaller margins around the text).

The a4 and a4wide packages are outdated and therefore not longer supported.
Support for the geometry package would be nice to have indeed -> please add
it in bugzilla.
