Thanks for the tip Paul! I almost always work from the command line, so
I was missing that button. I am getting close. Now I have:
$ python /path/to/lyxpreview2bitmap.py png 0lyxpreview.tex 128 000000 f0f0f0

Failed to extract metrics info from dvipng
where the last message is from lyxpreview2bitmap.py, and indeed the metrics
file produced by dvipng is empty. I'll investigate further.
