Hello, I'm unsure whether this qualifies as a bug report or a feature request.

I've found that it's (almost) impossible for me to achieve certain desirable LaTeX character sequences from within math mode. See my previous post at:
http://www.mail-archive.com/lyx-users@lists.lyx.org/msg43675.html

The current ERT mode for mathed makes it very efficient to type something like \gamma_{2t} (since I don't even have to type {}). However, the way LyX parses math mode ERT makes it impossible to type something like x^-{y}, which is essential for serious use of xypic.

I'd like to propose (what I hope could be) a reasonable solution to this issue. I notice that the parsing rules for a \textrm box in math mode are slightly different: spaces are allowed. You could make a new "ert box" that would behave just like a \textrm box, except it would allow arbitrary characters (such as ^ _ { \) without the usual math mode parsing.

I think something like this would greatly increase the power of mathed and spare the users from trying to find quirky workarounds.

What do you all think? Thanks to everyone for the spectacular job developing LyX! (It's saved me countless hours of LaTeX coding)

-Bob
