could you try the attached patch? It implements "single-row rendering"
as discussed earlier on the list.
It's still buggy, but I just want to know if this produces the
speed-up
we are seeking.
If there's a speed-up, it's minor: I don't notice any difference as I
type. In both cases, a sentence I can type in 8 seconds (into a large-
ish paragraph inside an inset) takes 16-17 seconds to display on screen.
