I cannot reproduce on yesterday's cvs version (MacOSX). In math mode,
typing "\alpha" and then left arrow displays the Greek character with
the cursor immediately to the left of it but within the math box.
Typing "\xrightarrow" followed by left arrow puts me in the box under
the right arrow.
