Dear developers,
I am writing this email as feedback from a user who wishes to promote
lyx to a wider "windows audience" in an academic environment.
Unfortunately many academics are under pressure to conform to using word
when writing scientific papers.
Word is not good at all in dealing with complex documents requiring
equations etc. and is poor at positioning figures and captions.
However word is good at "tracking changes", a feature considered
essential by many users.
Lyx 1.3.6 is now officially supported on the windows platform and I have
installed it with success for a person using windows. The new windows
installer is good. However I would like to note that during the miktex
installation part I thought the drive was going to crumble and die from
excessive head movements.
Tracking changes is requested by all possible converts.
I have implemented the tracking changes on my Linux 1.3.6 version and I
tried to compile a new windows version with the patch but I have given
up because I ran into many issues trying to get a MinGW system working
for Qt on a windows laptop. I used the "INSTALL.Win32" file as a guide
and had limited success but can not afford to spend more time getting a
full development environment on the windows PC.
My plea and advice is:
1) tracking changes is essential for many potential users
2) a new version for windows with tracking changes implemented would
help move many users here to lyx
If users can be moved and upgraded to Lyx, more would also consider
Linux as a viable alternative.
Thanks for your time and consideration,
David Hunter
