Can you explain what you mean by 'from underneath'?
IMO the general problem here is that a child document does not know if it
has a parent and which document that parent actually is. We see the same
problem with citations and cross references: If you don't load the child
document from the master document you don't see the whole list.

That one was for pasting. I think that something like this is needed for
Branches, too: What happens if you paste a branch inset from a document
with branches to another one without branches?
