Hello,

Document->Settings->Numbering&Toc is neither intuitive (the role of the
sliders), neither practical (moving the slider is pretty difficult).
Improvements are possible . . .
Would it be possible to have a simple list of the hierarchy of part, chapter,
section, subsection, etc. and checkboxes for numbering and inclusion in the
TOC.
. . . but that gives a wrong interface. Checkboxes used this way would
seem to imply that you can have a TOC that list, say, subsections only (but
not section & subsubsection), or everything _but_ subsections.
But such configurations are not possible.
I think sliders are a good idea - it can be done better than the
current dialog though. Vertical sliders, with the names of the
sectioning hierarchy to the left of the slider would be easier
to understand. The slider position would then correspond directly with
what gets included in the TOC. (Or what gets numbered.)
You may want to file a bug at http://bugzilla.lyx.org/
concerning this. I am not sure there is time to get this into 1.4.0, but
this way it won't be forgotten.
