I suspected something like that. The existing needsUpdate mechanism however is based on this expectation... but thus far we didn't notice as LyX was rendering way above and beyond the call of duty. The latest patch (did you read it?) does not use or assume anything about the return value, and sets needUpdate independently. - Martin
