This page: http://tinyurl.com/8lyh3 talks about LyX in the following way:
Text editor with Outline mode, e.g. MS Word
(http://www.microsoft.com/office/), LyX (http://www.lyx.org/) or Emacs
(http://www.xemacs.org/). Outline mode enables you to fold headings
and move complete "nodes" (chapters, sections, subsection) around, as
well as changing the levels of the nodes. The convenience and speed of
operation in the areas of restructuring, organizing, overviewing and
adding items does not reach that of FreeMind, but on the other hand:
if you already use one of these editors, you can avoid the extravagance
of installing and learning to use a new tool and gain part of what
FreeMind offers that way.
Did I miss something? Is there an outline mode in LyX that I am not
aware of?
Some things are foldable in LyX, but I don't know any way of
folding up chapters/sections/subsections and so on. You can
move around in a quick and structured way though - use the "navigate"
menu which list all the sectioning in a hierarchical manner.
You can still move chapters/sections in one operation, by selecting
and then moving it in the normal way.
Floating elements, footnotes, marginal notes and inserted latex code
are all foldable elements though. There are also some other elements,
like TOC, index, list of tables/figures that also are moved around as
a unit - because they are autogenerated and indivisible.
So lyx have some outlining features, but not all of them.
