"Branches" are something new to LyX 1.4 and their creator, Martin
Vermeer should really add some documentation to the User Guide...

However, as I read that he doesn't have access to the outside world
this week, here's my take on them:

Branches allow for "conditional compilation" of your document. For
example, you're preparing an exam for your students but would like
the markers to have your solutions too. Place the solutions in an
appropriately-named Branch inset and printing is then a matter of
activating this branch (using the Document dialog).

Q. Who invented gravity?
<branch name="solution">
A. Isaac Newton, when an apple fell on his head.
</branch>

Q. Who invented differential calculus?
<branch name="solution">
A. Isaac Newton, because he played politics better than Leibnitz.
</branch>

Does that help?
