Then the script has to be italic, too. The only way if found to get this is to 
use \texrm inside mathed, i.e.: \emph{foo$^{\textrm{bar}}$} produces the 
correct result (if AMS is used, also in size).

\texrm with AMS will work as well. This is status quo in 1.3

Yes! \textsuperscript and \textsubscript (the latter has to be defined in the 
preamble. But this is certainly 1.5 stuff.
