First-timers might get a bad impression.
As far as I know LyX might not even know that a last-ditch measure is used,
because the Qt font handling is intransparent. While your concerns are
valid I fear that a solution is not easy.
BTW, I had the same problem.
Lyx ask for a font, and qt doesn't tell if it isn't there, just returns the first in the list? Ouch. A qt bug then.
