OK, since nobody with a modern TeX seems to be interested in trying
out the patch on 1.3.x, here is an 1.4.0cvs version. Could somebody
test it? I thought it was very important for Windows and Mac?

Sorry -- I've been swamped.

I've tested the patch for 13x. Some observations:

1. The test for whether latex allows spaces doesn't work for me: reconfigure incorrectly reports that my version of latex does not allow spaces.

2. Consequently (?), when a file is located in a path with spaces, lyx refuses to run LaTeX.

3. Filenames with spaces work just fine (so long as there's no space in the path).

4. Paths with spaces can be manually typed into File > Preferences > Paths, but they cannot be selected with the "Browse..." button: error dialog comes up saying directory path cannot contain certain characters.

Additional problem (not with this patch): when a non-existent path is entered into File > Preferences > Paths > Document templates, attempting File > New from Template... brings up an open file dialog with the last accessed directory. Attempting to click on the "Templates" button within that dialog brings up a warning that the directory is non-existent. Proper behavior, IMO, is to bring up this warning when File > New from Template... is first selected.
