I have tried using lyx-1.4 cvs, and have some impressions: It works well enough for my work now. It will sometimes crash trying to load some old files, but is otherwise fine. I haven't tried any new stuff yet, I have mostly enjoyed the improved user interface. The toolbars are great, the menus has improved, there is so much that is easier to get at now. And the qt version is just as fast as 1.3.5 when tunneling X over an ADSL line.
Some problems: Several keyboard shortcuts seems to not work. I have to use menus to get nonbreaking spaces or the search dialog, there is no C-space or C-f. Page down or scrollbar click only scrolls half a page now - yuck! Twice as many keypresses to go the same distance. I consider the ideal to go a full page, perhaps minus a single line of context. If half a page scrolling is wanted by some, then I hope for configurability. Lyx 1.4 sometimes fail to scroll past large images, such as screendumps. But this can be worked around. The new ERT boxes that can be shorter than a full line are nice, but sometimes I get normal text in them instead of "red typewriter". The workaround is to move the cursor out of the box and in again. Making the box almost zero width when empty makes it hard to hit with the mouse, how about making it at least one "typewriter letter" in width minimum? Another item for my wishlist: Using lists/labeling one can use the paragraph settings to specify the longest label. It'd be nice to be able to paste the current longest label in there somehow. This is not trivial, as I usually have to select several paragraphs in order to set longest label for them all, and making a selection resets paste buffers. Some "easy" way of doing this would be nice. Perhaps a button that automatically picks the text of the biggest label? That'd only be a guess of course, but it'd almost always be correct if it is based on the label lengths of the screen font in use. That'd be good enough for me. 1.4 is great stuff, thanks for making it! Helge Hafting
