That's the best we can do, isn't it?
Without preview I can click directly into an inner mathinset.
So I see 3 possibilities:
a) Always place the cursor at the beginning
b) Always place the cursor at the end
c) Translate the (x,y) position on the preview to an (x',y') position 
of the "open" mathinset and simulate a click there.
