No, I am arguing that, besides this path_prefix variable, we should
add the binary dir to the path automatically. This will catter for the
needs of most users without having to change any special path. But
since I did not see your answer on this point (yet), I keep repeating
the same thing :)

Assuming the bindir is added to the PATH, I think that a ruurd-style
package will not need any other path setting (and this is good!).

Concerning the viewers, I think we should provide like in LyX/Mac a
default preference file with sets most viewers to something like 
"start $$i", so that the viewers do not have to be on the path (and
respect the system-wide settings).
