I've done this -- or at least tried to. (I'm not sure if I've cleaned up lyx_main.C or path_defines.C.in as completely as I should.) LyX was reconfigured to add a version suffix, and the script is named "lyx". Patches attached.
I've also attached a copy of my shell scripts that set the path, userdir, and sysdir for lyx-13x for your review. (The one for lyx-140 is pretty much the same.)
I've also put a copy of the resulting lyx-1.3.6 here: <http://edisk.fandm.edu/bennett.helm/LyX/LyX-1.3.6-test.zip>. Andreas, can you test that it works for you?
