I surely agree. (maybe we disagree with the dates: I think it is slow from
about when we changed the drawing scheme -- i.e soon after 1.3.)

I'm not as sure as Andre that we will be back to 1.3 speed *uniformly* (I'm
sure it is already/will be faster with nested tables and so, where the
recursive update was weakest). 
What I'm sure, is that the coord change doesn't make HEAD any slower,
conceptually (if any, it will get faster). And I'm pretty sure we will
bring it back to an useable state relatively easily/soon.
