I thinks this feature is rarely, if ever, used, and certainly does not
rectify lots of fragile code in the core. If anybody wants long-time
stability for his personal, widely distribures layouts, he should put
them in ftp/incoming.

Do you know of any of them which are not worth to be included in the LyX
distribution?
