Who am I that I can give you a "go"? Seriously, I think the normal rules 
should apply: Asking for comments, and just committing if nobody finds a 
problem.
I think I'll be creating the branch sometimes in the next days (even if it 
is some work, I can probably use the gained knowledge for my own work).

I believe he wrote that he would not do that in the near future? And even 
if he does that: the conflicts will not be too big. Of course only if he 
does no rewrite _all_ ;-)
